On 3 September 2026, a TISTR delegation led by Dr. Siriporn Larpkiattaworn, Chief Research Expert; Mrs. Cholticha Niwaspragit, Acting Director of Lam Takhong Research Station; and Dr. Boonnanida Sodha, Director of the International Relations Division, together with the TISTR research and international relations team, participated in the Nature-based Solutions Seminar on Water Quality Management for Public Water Resources in Thailand at the Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR). The seminar was co-hosted by ONWR and the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), facilitated by Monash University, and supported by the Australian Water Partnership (AWP).
The seminar brought together representatives from ONWR, the Department of Water Resources (DWR), TISTR, and the Royal Irrigation Department (RID) to explore the practical application of Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to enhance water quality management in Thailand’s public water resources.
During the seminar, Dr. Jianbin Wang, Chief Innovation Officer, Water Sensitive Cities Australia, Monash University, shared Australian and international experiences in applying NbS to water quality management, covering catchment management, inflow management, and reservoir management. Examples of NbS technologies and approaches included wetlands, bioretention systems, floating treatment wetlands, and biochar-based solutions.
Participants also exchanged perspectives on key water quality challenges in Thailand, particularly invasive aquatic species, nutrient management, and heavy metal contamination. Discussions explored opportunities to adapt NbS approaches to the Thai context by integrating governance, community participation, monitoring, and long-term operation and maintenance.
The seminar marked an important step in strengthening Thailand–Australia cooperation in science, technology, and innovation, paving the way for further technical workshops and knowledge-sharing activities to develop practical and sustainable water management solutions for Thailand.
