Research & Development for Bio-Industries
The Bio-Industries group is responsible for conducting integrated R&D in order to fulfill the needs of bio-industries of the country. The group comprises 4 departments and 1 centre as follows:
Food Technology Department (FTD) :
Its responsibilities are to conduct R&D, transfer technology; as well as to design food production process, process prototype, and equipment prototype which are used for processing agricultural products into health food, export food, supplementary food, etc. Other tasks of
FTD include improvement of production processes and quality of products for the SMEs and community enterprises; provisions of R&D services to achieve value-added products from food and agriculture industry wastes; consultancy services; analysis, testing, and training services for food industry.
Pharmaceuticals and Natural Products Department (PND) :
The responsibilities of PND are to conduct integrated R&D on medicine and health products developed from herbal plants, and to transfer and incubate technology of the products concerned. Medicine development is also the focus, based on Thai pharmacopoeia, and the products in the categories of balancing regulator, anti-aging, cosmeceuticals (latest development), as well as essential oils for spa and Thai fragrance businesses. Moreover, PND helps promote the improvement of production process and quality of SMEs products and community enterprises for the benefit of medicinal industry and health products from herbal plants.
Bio-Science Department (BSD) :
The main responsibilities of BSD are to collect, classify, identify,store, and create a database of bioscience resources. Other key activities include R&D, technology transfer and incubation projects related to the production of bio-substances, bio-products, and bio-innovations to be used as food and medicine for human, plants, and animals, and also for the alleviation of problems arising from energy and the environmental issues. It is also home to the culture collection of microalgae, the largest one in 3 of Asia after China and Japan. Other special services provided concern contracted R&D, consultancy, analyses, testing, and training in the areas of development of microbes and biomasses, modified products from bio-substances and bio-products, and biological production process. The bio-informatics database systematically developed is expected to be of great advantage to the development of biological industry of the country.
Agricultural Technology Department (ATD) :
ATD’s activities focus on the integrated R&D, technology transfer and incubation projects on the production of new economic plants, herbal plants, vegetables, fruits, organic fertilizers, bio-fertilizer, and environment-friendly protective agents and pesticides. Various topics of R&D under ATD’s interests include value adding of agriculture industry wastes, life-time extension of agricultural crops with post-harvest technology, as well as consultancy and training services concerning agricultural technology. Lam Takhong Research Station (LTS) is an important site responsible for agricultural experiments. Acting as a knowledge resource centre in agricultural technology, LTS plays a key role in supporting R&D and technology transfer in agriculture of TISTR.
Thai Packaging Centre (TPC) :
The main activities of TPC concern R&D, technology transfer and incubation related to packaging technology and packaging materials including packaging design, and innovation of packaging materials of specific structures and properties. Packaging technologies on the focus are, for example, active packaging, intelligent packaging, natural packaging material and degradable plastic. TPC also provides services on R&D, consultancy, analysis and testing, packaging information as well as training for packaging industry. To help industrialists keep pace with current issues, TPC has provided an information service via the database of packaging entrepreneurs and packaging technologies.
Research and Development for Sustainable Development
Research & Development for Sustainable Development. The responsibilities of the Sustainable Development Group involve integrated R&D projects which have been conducted following the national policy on sustainable development. This R&D group is divided into 4 departments as follows:
Energy Technology Department (ETD) :
ETD has its main activities in conducting R&D, transferring and incubating technology and designing production process as well as process and equipment prototype in the production of clean fuel from biomasses for the benefits of efficiency increasing in heating, electrical, and construction equipment. ETD is also responsible
for consultancy services, analysis and testing, and training service on alternative energy and efficient utilisation of energy. Audits of energy consumption in transportation, agriculture, industry, trade business, and residential areas are another service provided by ETD.
Environment and Resources Technology Department (ERD) :
The R&D projects technology transfer and incubation, as well as design of production process, process prototype, and equipment prototype undertaken by ERD mainly involve the areas of water pollutant treatment technology, clean technology, and management technology. This aims to obtain value added products or utilisation of wastes and residues from community, industrial, and electronic refuses. The department’s research services are in these following fields: bio-diversity and the environmental impact assessment; conservation of natural resources, ecological system, forest rehabilitation, wild animals, and natural environment. Moreover, ERD’s activities include the investigation and planning in resources and environmental management. Last but not least, Sakaerat Environment Research Station (SERS) is a famous place for disseminating the knowledge of nature and wildlife, hence acting as a learning centre in the management of ecological tourism destination.
Material Innovation Department (MID) :
MID conducts R&D concerning materials. Moreover, it involves the design of production process and product prototype in various types such as progress materials (porous ceramic, engineering ceramic, electronic ceramic, nano-material, polymer membrane), energy materials (energy-converting materials e.g. hermoelectric material), and energy-saving material (insulator), and finally, interlocking soil-cement block technology.
Engineering Department (EGD) :
R&D, technology transfer and incubation, design of equipment and machine in food technology, health products, agriculture, and alternative energy are the responsibilities undertaken by EGD. These innovations have been created with the aim to substitute the import ones and seek new knowledge. EGD also provides services in engineering design, consultancy, analysis and testing, training on production process and the operation of equipment and tools in food industry, health products, agriculture and alternative energy. One outstanding activity conducted by EGD is R&D on equipment and pilot plant prototypes.
